Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the ambitious research and innovation framework programme running from 2021-2027 with a budget of €95.5 billion. Its overarching goals are:

to strengthen the EU's scientific and technological bases and the European Research Area (ERA);
to boost Europe's innovation capacity, competitiveness and jobs;
to deliver on citizen's priorities and sustain our socio-economic model and values.

with a particular focus on creating impact or the European Green Deal, the digital and sustainability transition and recovery from the coronavirus-crisis.

Topics:

Pillar I “Excellent science”:
- Frontier research funded by the European Research Council (ERC)
- Flagship programme for doctoral and postdoctoral training funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)

Pillar II “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness”:
- Cluster 1: Health
- Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment

Within the clusters of pillar II, Horizon Europe incorporates missions to increase the effectiveness of funding by pursuing clearly defined targets with a concrete impact on citizen’s daily lives. The following 2 mission areas are relevant to food safety:
- Soil health and food
- Healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters

Under pillar II, Horizon Europe also supports European partnerships aiming at contributing to the achievement of EU priorities, addressing complex challenges outlined in Horizon Europe and strengthening the European Research Area (ERA).
