EFSA explains the Safety of Aspartame

In EFSA’s first ever full risk assessment of the food additive aspartame, the Authority’s experts concluded that aspartame and its breakdown products are safe for human consumption at current levels of exposure. This four-page summary of the safety of aspartame was written by EFSA staff directly involved in this work. Aspartame is a low-calorie, artificial sweetener - approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. The sweetener is authorised in the European Union for use in drinks, desserts, sweets, dairy products, chewing gums, energy-reduced and weight control products, and as a table-top sweetener. This assessment was carried out as part of the re-evaluation of the safety of all previously authorised food additives in the EU.
